Private 5G and Wi-Fi are both methods of wireless Internet access; however, they are different technologies with their own advantages. They do not substitute for each other; they complement each other very well and are good for various situations and uses.
Wi-Fi networks can be complex to install in some large spaces, such as an outdoor site or Manufacturing. They involve many access points to ensure thorough coverage of an area. It can in some cases be easier to install Private 5G as less “APs” will be required to cover the same area(frequency & type dependant).
Wi-Fi and private 5G both work on Radio frequencies but perform quite differently:
Wi-Fi Challenges:. Moving between access points might lead to delays/latency or lost connections, especially for highly sensitive devices.
Private 5G Advantages: Private 5G has low delays, offers more stable performance with fewer interruptions, so can be better suited for situations requiring high reliability and good quality of service.
Wi-Fi will still be necessary for most connected devices, mainly for indoor applications and locations with already installed infrastructure. However, private 5G has brought capabilities such as high-speed connections and massive IoT deployments, which are increasingly important for enterprise and industrial environments. Devices equipped with both technologies can seamlessly switch between them, using the best of each.
