Octopus Energy came to us to install WiFi for their new warehouse in Rotherham.
The Client
Octopus Energy has rapidly established itself as one of the UK’s most innovative and customer-centric energy suppliers. With a mission to make energy greener, cleaner, and more affordable, it has earned a reputation not only for competitive tariffs and renewable power generation but also for its emphasis on transparency, user experience, and digital efficiency. Drawing on cutting-edge technology, Octopus is transforming how consumers interact with energy markets, while tackling long-standing challenges in supplier trust and environmental impact. They came to us to install WiFi for their new warehouse in Rotherham.
The Scope
Octopus was a new tenant in a large UK warehouse dedicated to stocking renewable energy products, including heat pumps, smart meters, water tanks, and solar panels. But the site wasn’t just a storage and distribution hub; it also incorporated a unique training and demo space, featuring a fully built bungalow used to train engineers on real-world installations. This meant our wireless design needed to overcome the usual complexities of a warehouse environment, such as high racking and wide open spaces, while also providing seamless, reliable coverage throughout the training facility. Ensuring strong connectivity across both areas was essential for Octopus, as it supported not only stock management and day-to-day operations but also the practical training of engineers in a hands-on learning environment.
The Challenge
The existing network was not fit for purpose for Octopus, necessitating our detailed evaluation of the current network and the design of a new setup. The existing infrastructure appeared to be more of a temporary solution to get them up & running, which soon proved unreliable for day-to-day operations. With an operational warehouse already in use, any upgrades had to minimise downtime and disruption.
Our Approach
Performance Networks carried out a complete on-site WiFi survey to fault-find and design a new solution from the ground up. Using a hybrid survey model, we deployed test access points on site in various locations to provide the data needed to build a tailored wireless design, which was then presented to the customer along with our findings.
The Solution
The project involved a complete rip and replace of the existing network, removing the unreliable legacy infrastructure and replacing it with a brand-new design. To deliver secure, reliable connectivity across the warehouse, we installed Meraki firewalls, switches, and access points, tailored to the client’s & site’s needs. Installation work was carried out via a mixture of in-hours & outside of regular working hours. It was tested in parallel with the current network, minimising downtime & ensuring operational continuity, and preventing any disruption to day-to-day warehouse activity.
The Outcome
The client now benefits from a fully functional warehouse wireless network designed specifically for their warehouse environment. Connectivity is stable across stock areas and the training facility, enabling staff to manage stock, track assets, and deliver engineer training without interruption. By combining surveys, hybrid testing, and smart scheduling of work, Performance Networks delivered a robust solution that supports both daily operations and future growth.
